Purple / Blue Toning Products

What's the fuss about blue / purple toning products for blonde or lightened hair?

When pigments from hair color inevitably fade, hair usually turns brassy as it goes back to its natural yellow-red state.

The base yellow / orange tone you see is from a mix of natural red pigments found in Asian hair and yellow pigments found in keratin.

Hair Color Levels and Tones

We use basic color theory to counter brassiness - Violet is the direct opposite of yellow on the color wheel, while blue is the direct opposite of orange. This means that combining these complementary (opposite) colors results in a neutral, grayish tone.

When we use purple shampoos/conditioners on yellowish hair, it results in an ashier tone. When we use blue shampoos/conditioners on orange tones, hair appears more neutralized as well.
