Don’t Let The Weather Rain on Your Parade - Guide to Humidity Proofing Your Hair

Whether you like it or not, Philippine weather takes its toll on your strands. You may not notice it as much but even the slightest changes in humidity and temperature can affect your hair. In a tropical country like the Philippines, where weather shifts from hot to wet in a matter of minutes, your hair can really struggle to stay smooth and frizzy-free. Good thing we’ve got a few tricks to keep your hair looking sharp whatever the weather.

Your Hair in The Philippines

The Philippines’ tropical climate is hot and generally wet. This high temperature mixed in with an abundance of rainfall can really leave strands frazzled, especially since it's pretty much humid all year round. So why does this happen?
Hair holds on to moisture, but how well it manages that hydration can depend on its type and condition. If your hair is dry or quite porous, it can easily lose moisture. If it’s thick and coarse, it can be inadequately moisturized – unable to seal in the hydration inside it. So when the level of humidity in the air is greater than the water level in your hair, your strands begin to rearrange its bonds inside the hair fiber, drawn to the moisture outside of it, leaving you with some unwanted frizz. So what can you do about it? Here are our top tips!

Maximize Your Shower Hydration

While your hair is wet, help it lock in a healthy amount of hydration with your choice of conditioner or mask. These products are packed with ingredients that help replenish hair’s moisture often stripped away by harsh shampoos. These make strands more “humid proof” in that they ensure hair has enough moisture inside to keep strands from drying out.
For thin strands that don’t want to want to be weighed down, try Davines LOVE Conditioner: Lovely Smoothing Conditioner , P1,295. It gently conditions frizzy and unruly hair to give elasticity, hydration, and natural straightening.
For medium to coarse strands consider Schwarzkopf BC Bonacure Keratin Smooth Perfect Treatment , P1,620, an intensive taming and nourishing treatment made with highly concentrated cationic polymers and silicone oils for unruly & coarse hair.
If you have medium to coarse strands but have an oily prone scalp, try L’Oréal Pro Liss Unlimited Mask, P1,290, a luxurious hair mask that polishes the strand’s surface and serves as an effective humidity blocker.

Seal Them With Hair Oils

Now you may think it’s an overkill to use hair oil when you’ve thoroughly conditioned your hair, but sealing in those strands with it helps a whole lot, even hours after your shower. The key is getting the right balance of moisture and this will depend on your styling routine and the richness of your hair oil.
If have dry to normal strands then a rich hair oil like Davines Oi Oil , P2,050, can instantly tame hair frizz, adding extraordinary shine and softness to hair.
For more coarse strands or if you use heat styling try an opulent hair oil like Kérastase Discipline Oléo-Relax Hair Oil , P1,900. It’s one of our best sellers and is composed of 3 key oils that durably control frizz and humidity-induced volume for 24 hours of hair manageability even under 80% humidity.
Got thick frizzy strands but with a scalp tends to be oily? Hair oils may not be for you. Consider a light leave-in conditioner applied only on the lengths like AVEDA Smooth Infusion™ Nourishing Styling Creme, P2,100. It helps seal in moisture and lock out frizz all day—even in intense humidity—with conditioning cupuaçu and shea butters.
PRO TIP: When applying hair oils or leave-in conditioners, start with a small pea sized amount and rub along your fingers and palms. Then begin to comb it into your hair moving along your open fingers, instead of pressing down between your palms. Distributing oils well makes a huge difference in your hair.

For Damaged Strands

We want to take a moment to dedicate a special section to this, because you may think hair is simply frizzy when in fact it could already be damaged. Early signs of damage are often marked by it’s inability to hold on to moisture and especially in our hot and humid Philippine climate, these will lead to frizz and tangles. Make sure you take the right steps in addressing your damaged hair! Read more about hair damage here.
You can’t control the weather but you can influence how your hair reacts to it. By making sure your hair has balanced moisture throughout the day, you can guard the strands from going haywire. We know hair care in the Philippines has its challenges, so we hope our tips give you the confidence to go out there whatever the weather.
